June was a wet month here in Central Alberta. And with a month of rain followed by the projected warm, dry weather means an influx of those pesky blood suckers: mosquitoes.
Mosquitoes can quickly ruin any outing from a backyard barbecue to quiet camping out in nature. In our past blogs we have broken down what you need to get ready to tow and go camping. Now we are breaking down an important part of your camping needs: mosquito repellant.
Types of Repellants
There are many ways to protect yourself from the dreaded mosquito. From long layers to candles to lotions there are many convenient ways to protect yourself. The most common mosquito repellant in Canada is probably a spray like Off! Mosquito Repellant.
Now I you ask any of us here at LAND Auto Center, we are not a fan of the smell or the sticky feeling sprays leave behind – though they are handy if you are going hiking.
Our favourite way to keep the bugs away is through an orderless, rechargeable system that diffuses repellant in the air.
Did you know there are plants that act as natural mosquito repellants? Basil, citronella grass, garlic, lavender, lemon balm, lemongrass, marigold, peppermint, and rosemary are just a few plants that can easily be purchased from a local garden center that can help to keep the bugs away.
Thermacell Mosquito Repellants
Thermacell offers an odorless barrier between you and any mosquitoes in the area. It does this with a fuel cartridge and a mat refill which diffuses in the air to create a mosquito-free zone. And it creates a barrier around the device, not around you.
The Thermacell repellents create a minimum 15-foot radius of mosquito free living, depending on which one you choose.
Rechargeable and Refillable
One of our favourite features on these is the rechargeable lithium-ion battery. It gives up to 5.5 hours of continuous mosquito protection per charge. Each system comes with 12 hours of unscented, liquid-repellent and the refills are inexpensive and easy to switch out. And you can even buy 40-hour repellant refills, so you can be protected for even longer.
Mobile Protection
Because these are battery-powered you can take them with you just about everywhere! If you are heading to the beach, or for a campout in the back woods, or even just hanging out in your backyard, there little devices can keep you protected for hours!
